Midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is set to return to the England national team for the first time in seven years, bringing versatility and experience to Thomas Tuchel’s squad. Loftus-Cheek, who played under Tuchel at Chelsea during the 2021-22 season, was a late addition to England’s roster for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, after Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton withdrew due to injury.
“It’s been a long time,” Loftus-Cheek said at England’s training base at St. George’s Park. “I was part of the 2018 World Cup squad, and after that, I ruptured my Achilles. Being away for so long, I got used to not going, but I still followed the team as a fan.”
Versatility Under Tuchel
Loftus-Cheek credits Tuchel with improving his versatility on the pitch. Originally a central midfielder from Chelsea’s academy, he has also played wing-back and other positions. “Tuchel suggested I am a powerful runner and have the pace to play elsewhere,” Loftus-Cheek explained. “I’ve played many positions under him, and that versatility is important in a tournament.”
Determined to Help England Win
Despite a career interrupted by injuries, Loftus-Cheek is focused on helping England win their first trophy since the 1966 World Cup. “We were so close in 2018, finishing fourth, and the boys have stayed close since then,” he said. “I hope for the future that we can go all the way.”
England will face Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday and then Serbia in Belgrade three days later. Loftus-Cheek’s inclusion adds depth and options for Tuchel as the team prepares for these critical World Cup qualifiers.
