Luis Suarez reacts during Leagues Cup match for Inter Miami

Sept 5, 2025 – Inter Miami forward Luis Suarez has apologized for spitting on a Seattle Sounders staff member during a scuffle at the conclusion of the Leagues Cup final. The match ended in a 3-0 victory for Seattle.

Suarez posted on Instagram:

“First, I want to congratulate the Seattle Sounders for their Leagues Cup triumph. But most of all, I want to apologize for my behavior when the game ended. It was a moment of much tension and frustration… I made a mistake and sincerely apologize. It’s not the image I want to give in front of my family or my club.”


Inter Miami Responds

Inter Miami issued a statement condemning the incident:

“Inter Miami condemns the altercations following the Leagues Cup Final. These actions do not reflect the values of our sport. We are working closely with Leagues Cup and MLS officials to ensure the situation is addressed appropriately. We thank our fans for their continued support.”


Suarez’s History and Current Form

The 38-year-old Uruguayan striker, formerly of Liverpool and Barcelona, has faced disciplinary issues before, including suspensions for biting opponents and a previous racial abuse allegation.

This season, Suarez has scored six goals and provided 10 assists in 22 MLS matches. In the Leagues Cup, he added three goals and three assists in six matches.

Inter Miami currently sits sixth in the MLS Eastern Conference with a record of 13-5-7 and will face Charlotte FC in their next road match.
