Man United Target Three Premier League Stars in Major Midfield Overhaul Plan

Manchester United are lining up a blockbuster midfield rebuild as the club focuses on signing Premier League-proven talent to support manager Ruben Amorim’s long-term project. United have drawn up a three-man shortlist featuring Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, and Carlos Baleba as they prepare to strengthen the squad next summer.

Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson — a standout in Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup qualifying campaign — is high on United’s radar after impressing against them recently. Adam Wharton has also caught attention after making his full England debut, while Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba remains a top target following United’s interest in the summer.

United are willing to wait until the summer window rather than force January deals if their Premier League rivals refuse to negotiate. The club believes securing top-tier domestic talent will be crucial for Amorim’s next phase of rebuilding.

Summer Signings Paying Off

United’s recent Premier League purchases have already shown value.
Bryan Mbeumo, signed for £71m, leads the team with six goals, while Matheus Cunha, brought in from Wolves for £62.5m, has become a key figure in Amorim’s new-look attack. Before Cunha arrived, the club had gone years without signing directly from another Premier League side aside from Mason Mount.

Midfield Priority as Key Exits Loom

Midfield has now become the top priority, with United prepared to invest heavily once more.
Veteran midfielder Casemiro is expected to leave unless he accepts a reduced salary, as the club will not activate the one-year extension in his current deal. The Brazilian is one of only three players earning more than £300,000 per week.

United are also set to move on Jadon Sancho, who will be released in June, and left-back Tyrell Malacia, whose contract expires in seven months.

Major Wage and Transfer Boost Incoming

Letting go of Casemiro and Sancho would save United over £31 million annually in wages. More financial boosts are expected next year, with Napoli obligated to make Rasmus Hojlund’s loan permanent for £38m.

Barcelona also have a £30m option to buy Marcus Rashford, who has produced six goals and nine assists on loan while the Spanish club covers his full £325,000 weekly wage.

United’s Three Midfield Targets

  • Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest): 11 games, 15 chances created, 1 goal, 1 assist
  • Carlos Baleba (Brighton): Strong ball-winning presence and athletic profile
  • Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace): 9 games, 14 chances created, reliable passer

United believe one of these players will become the midfield linchpin for Amorim’s rebuilt squad next season.
