Manchester United has reported a net loss for the sixth straight year and expects lower revenue in the current fiscal year, highlighting ongoing financial challenges for the Premier League club.

Financial results for the year

For the year ending June 30, Manchester United posted a net loss of 33 million pounds ($45 million), an improvement from the previous year’s deficit of 113.2 million pounds. The narrower loss reflects cost-cutting measures aimed at stabilizing the club’s finances after years of underperformance both on and off the field.

The club projects revenue between 640 million pounds and 660 million pounds for fiscal 2026, down from 666.5 million pounds reported for the year ended June 30. Shares in the New York-listed club fell 3.8% in premarket trading to $15.79.

Impact of spending rules and cost-cutting measures

Manchester United has accumulated losses of around 175 million pounds since fiscal 2023. The Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) cap losses at 105 million pounds over a three-year period but allow deductions for infrastructure, academy investments, charity, and women’s football. The club confirmed it remains in compliance with both PSR and UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.

Minority owner Jim Ratcliffe, holding roughly 29% of the club, has implemented cost-saving measures, including staff reductions, higher ticket prices, and the removal of free staff meals.

On-field performance and financial pressure

Manchester United’s absence from European competitions this season is expected to reduce broadcasting revenue, strain cash flow, and intensify pressure on the club’s balance sheet. Early Premier League results – one win, one draw, and two losses – have frustrated fans despite a summer transfer outlay of approximately 230 million pounds on new attacking players.

CEO Omar Berrada said, “As we start to feel the benefits of our cost reduction programme, there is significant potential for improved financial performance, which will, in turn, support our overriding priority: success on the pitch.”
