Marcus Rashford Faces ‘Staggering’ Costs as Dream Home Project Stalls After Five Years

Marcus Rashford’s dream-home build has suffered major delays, potentially costing the Manchester United forward up to £15 million. The England star purchased a former golf course and clubhouse in 2020 for £2.25 million but, five years on, the project remains unfinished.

The 63-acre site in Mobberley, Cheshire, was planned to host a five-bedroom mansion complete with an indoor swimming pool, gym, games room, and chill-out area. Additional plans included a separate apartment, landscaped gardens, and environmental provisions for bats, birds, hedgehogs, and newts.

Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona, has asked his finance team to investigate the delays. Sources say a summer dispute over payments slowed progress, though work has recently resumed at a slow pace. Rashford is determined to see the project completed despite escalating costs.

Neighbours have expressed concern over the overgrown site. Roy Baker, an 80-year-old farmer next door, explained the challenges, noting the house was built at a low point on the land, resulting in flooding and the need for constant pumping. He also highlighted the threat posed by weeds spreading onto surrounding properties, some of which are toxic to horses.

“The amount of heavy machinery on site has been unbelievable,” Baker said. “But there’s no sign of a finished building, and the costs involved are staggering, even for someone on £350,000 a week.”

Rashford’s building agent has visited nearby residents multiple times, addressing concerns and land management issues, which are understood to cost around £1 million per year. Rising construction costs and modifications to the original plans have also contributed to delays.

Meanwhile, Rashford has put the mansion up for rent at £14,000 per month, with a £16,000 deposit. Friends report he is enjoying life in Barcelona, appreciating the pace and relative anonymity compared to Manchester.

Ben Smith, managing director of Noble Projects, which is handling the build, defended the quality of work, saying the company maintains high standards and respects client confidentiality. A spokesperson for Rashford denied there were any issues with the project.

Despite the setbacks, Rashford remains focused on completing his dream home while thriving in Spain.
