Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has launched a scathing critique of the club’s direction, blaming its ongoing struggles on constant managerial changes and the lack of a clear, long-term vision.
The 27-year-old, currently on loan at Barcelona after a fallout with United boss Ruben Amorim, says the club has been “stuck in no man’s land” for years due to frequent shifts in coaching philosophies. Rashford spent the second half of last season at Aston Villa, where he enjoyed a brief resurgence before sealing his latest loan move.
“People say we’ve been in transition for years, but to be in a transition you have to actually start it,” Rashford said on The Rest is Football podcast.
“When Liverpool brought in Klopp, they stuck with him despite a slow start. We’ve had so many managers and ideas that we’ve ended up in no man’s land.”
United’s Decline Since Ferguson
Since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, United have endured a turbulent decade, cycling through high-profile coaches including David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag, each with vastly different playing styles.
While United have lifted a few domestic cups in the post-Ferguson era, Rashford insists those victories were more about individual quality than a clear footballing philosophy.
“If your direction is always changing, you can’t expect to win the league. You might win cup tournaments because you have match winners, but not sustained success,” he added.
The “Man United Way” Lost
Rashford also lamented the loss of the club’s historic principles that once ran from the first team down to the academy.
“When Ferguson was in charge, the whole club understood the principles of playing the Man United way. That’s why it worked for so long. Any new coach or player had to align with those principles.”
United, who finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League last season, have not won the league title since the 2012-13 campaign. Meanwhile, rivals Liverpool have now equalled United’s record of 20 league
