Los Angeles FC defender Maxime Chanot has announced his retirement from professional soccer at age 35. The Luxembourg international enjoyed a 10-year MLS career, playing for New York City FC (2016–2023) and LAFC (2024–2025).

During his MLS career, Chanot scored 10 goals in 237 appearances. This season, he featured in only one match, sidelined by a head injury that ultimately prompted his retirement.

“Since I was a child, I dreamed of becoming a professional footballer… I am proud that I never gave up,” Chanot said.
“Despite all my efforts over the past few months to return to the pitch, my head injury forces me to step away from the game I love… I leave the game with a peaceful heart filled with gratitude.”

Chanot’s career highlights include:

  • MLS Cup winner with NYCFC in 2021
  • Campeones Cup winner in 2022
  • US Open Cup winner with LAFC in 2024
  • MLS Defender of the Year finalist in 2019

He earned 72 caps and scored 4 goals for the Luxembourg national team and also played professionally in France, England, and Belgium.

LAFC co-president John Thorrington praised Chanot:

“He has been a model of professionalism… his consistency and leadership will long be remembered. We wish Max the absolute best as he begins this next chapter.”
