Match Halted After Alleged Slur
Kylian Mbappe has called for a Champions League ban for Gianluca Prestianni after an alleged racist remark directed at Vinícius Júnior during Real Madrid’s 1 0 first leg win over Benfica in Lisbon.
The incident occurred shortly after Vinicius scored early in the second half at the Estadio da Luz. Television footage showed Prestianni covering his mouth with his shirt before making a comment that Vinicius and nearby teammates interpreted as a racial slur.
Referee Francois Letexier activated FIFA’s anti racism protocol, halting the match for 11 minutes.
Mbappe Demands Strong Action
Mbappe appeared visibly angry during the confrontation and later told reporters that such behaviour should not be tolerated in Europe’s top competition.
He said a player who behaves in that manner does not deserve to compete in the Champions League and stressed the importance of setting an example for young fans watching around the world.
Mbappe also revealed he was prepared to leave the pitch but was persuaded by Vinicius to continue playing. When asked if Prestianni had apologised, he laughed and replied that he had not.
Prestianni Denies Allegation
Prestianni denied the accusation in a social media statement, saying Vinicius had misheard him. He insisted he never directed racist insults at the Brazilian and expressed regret over threats he claimed to have received.
Real midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni supported Mbappe’s version of events, stating that he heard the same alleged remark more than once.
Vinicius Speaks Out
Vinicius later posted a strong message condemning racism, describing racists as cowards and expressing frustration at what he sees as repeated incidents in his career.
The Brazilian forward has previously faced racist abuse in Spain, with multiple legal complaints filed since 2022.
Despite the hostile atmosphere after play resumed, Real Madrid held on to secure a 1 0 victory. The two sides will meet again next week at the Santiago Bernabeu for the decisive second leg.
