Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has confirmed that FIFA will review security and mobility plans in the country ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement comes amid recent security concerns following unrest linked to the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as “El Mencho.” Despite the situation, Sheinbaum reassured fans earlier this week that there is “no risk” to supporters travelling to Mexico for the tournament.
FIFA President Gives Assurance
Sheinbaum revealed she held a phone conversation with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who assured her that World Cup matches scheduled in Mexico will proceed as planned.
Beyond security, Infantino also raised concerns about transportation and city mobility, particularly in the three host cities:
- Mexico City
- Monterrey
- Guadalajara
The aim is to guarantee smooth movement for fans attending matches.
