Morocco crowned AFCON champions after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board overturned Senegal’s win in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. Senegal were stripped of the title for walking off the pitch in protest at a late penalty.
CAF Forfeiture Ruling
CAF confirmed that Senegal “forfeited the final match.” The result is now officially recorded as 3-0 in favor of Morocco. This decision officially made Morocco crowned AFCON champions.
What Happened in the Final
In stoppage time of January’s final, referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty after a VAR check. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, unhappy with a previous disallowed goal, sent his players off the pitch in protest.
Sadio Mane tried to convince the players to return. After a 16-minute delay, the game resumed. Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, and Senegal scored in extra time through Pape Gueye. Despite this, CAF ruled in favor of Morocco, confirming Morocco crowned AFCON champions.
Reactions
Morocco coach Walid Regragui called the walk-off “shameful” for African football. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw apologized, saying it was a reaction “in the heat of the moment.” CAF condemned the behavior of certain players and officials.
Historic Victory
With the ruling finalized, Morocco crowned champions in dramatic fashion. The 2025 trophy officially goes to Morocco, marking a historic achievement despite the controversy.
