Napoli plot shock January move for Kobbie Mainoo but Manchester United may block transfer

Napoli are reportedly preparing a surprise move to sign Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window.

Mainoo has struggled for regular game time this season, with manager Ruben Amorim preferring a midfield pairing of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. The 19-year-old has yet to start a Premier League match this campaign.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli are closely monitoring the youngster’s situation and could launch a bid in January. The Serie A side are set to lose Frank Anguissa for several weeks when he represents Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations, and see Mainoo as a potential replacement.

Napoli had already attempted to include Mainoo in a summer deal that brought Rasmus Hojlund to Old Trafford but were unsuccessful.

However, United are expected to resist any attempts to sign the England international, even for a short-term move. The Red Devils will already be without several players during AFCON, including Bryan Mbeumo, Amad, and Noussair Mazraoui, which could further limit the club’s willingness to let Mainoo leave.

Mainoo had also requested a loan move last summer, which the club turned down. Speaking about player exits, Amorim said, “Players want to play, there’s a World Cup, and there’s always noise around that. But they are our players, and we need everyone to have a good season.”

If Napoli proceed with their interest, it remains to be seen whether Manchester United will consider any offers for one of their brightest young talents.
