The New England Patriots have turned their attention to fixing defensive flaws after a tough Super Bowl loss. Just weeks after falling 29-13 to the NFL champion Seattle Seahawks, the franchise has already started making moves to reshape that side of the ball.
One of the first steps came with the addition of Shane Bowen as a defensive analyst. The hire reunites him with head coach Mike Vrabel, with whom he previously worked during their time with the Tennessee Titans. The move signals a clear intent to strengthen defensive structure and preparation heading into the next season.
“The #Patriots are hiring former #Giants and #Titans DC Shane Bowen as a defensive analyst, source said,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posted on X.
The Super Bowl loss exposed several issues that New England cannot ignore. The defense struggled to contain Seattle’s rushing attack, with Kenneth Walker III, who has now signed with Kansas City, to control the game on the ground.

Missed assignments and poor tackling allowed consistent gains, putting pressure on the entire unit. That lack of control also limited offensive opportunities, as Seattle dominated possession.
Third-down defense also proved costly. The Seahawks kept extending drives, converting some of those opportunities, and keeping momentum on their side. Whether through short passes or quarterback movement, New England failed to close out plays when it mattered most.

Another concern came from the pass rush, which failed to make an impact. The Patriots recorded just a single sack by Milton Williams, allowing Sam Darnold time to operate comfortably. Without consistent pressure, the secondary was left exposed, leading to further breakdowns across the field.
Special teams added to the problem by giving up strong field position. Seattle often forced the defense into difficult situations throughout the game.

These combined struggles have pushed the Patriots toward a defensive reset. Bringing in Bowen reflects a focus on discipline, structure, and execution. Vrabel and his staff now face the challenge of turning lessons from the loss into improvements.
The Patriots remain a competitive team, but the Super Bowl showed the gap that still exists. So, they need to fix it to return stronger next season.
