Several Premier League stars are walking a disciplinary tightrope as the festive period approaches, with just one yellow card separating them from a one-match suspension.
Under Premier League rules, any player who accumulates five yellow cards within the first 19 league matches of the season is automatically handed a one-game ban. With only two rounds of fixtures remaining before the threshold resets, 21 players are currently sitting on four bookings.
If any of these players are cautioned in the upcoming matches, they would miss games scheduled between December 26 and December 28, effectively ruling them out over the Christmas period.
After Matchweek 19, the disciplinary rules become stricter. Players must then receive 10 yellow cards to trigger a suspension, while reaching that mark before Matchweek 32 results in a two-match ban. Any player who accumulates 15 yellow cards at any point in the season will face a three-game suspension.
Among the notable names at risk is Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who has already picked up four cautions this season. Manchester City also have concerns, with Bernardo Silva and Gianluigi Donnarumma both edging closer to suspension.
At Aston Villa, Matt Cash and Boubacar Kamara are also just one booking away from serving a ban. Tottenham Hotspur full-back Pedro Porro joined the list after collecting his fourth yellow card in the recent defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Other players under threat include Bruno Guimarães of Newcastle United, Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool, and James Garner at Everton. Several defenders and midfielders across the league will need to show discipline in the coming fixtures to avoid missing crucial holiday games.
With the festive schedule traditionally packed with important fixtures, avoiding unnecessary bookings could prove vital for both players and their clubs as the Premier League season intensifies.
