Marcus Rashford’s long-term future at Barcelona has been thrown into uncertainty, with reports suggesting the La Liga giants are unlikely to trigger their £26 million option to sign him permanently.
The England forward joined Barcelona on loan during the summer after leaving Manchester United, and he has openly stated his desire to remain at the Nou Camp beyond this season. But despite a positive start — scoring six goals and providing nine assists in 18 appearances — Rashford is not viewed by manager Hansi Flick as an automatic starter.
According to The Athletic, the most realistic scenario is that Rashford will leave Barcelona at the end of the campaign and return to Old Trafford. That would mean facing a fresh battle to impress United manager Ruben Amorim, or seeking another move elsewhere.
The situation marks another setback for the 28-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa after being frozen out by Amorim. Villa manager Unai Emery opted not to activate a £40 million buy option, forcing Rashford back to United before Barcelona came calling.
With Barcelona considering alternatives in the transfer market, the club may decide against making Rashford’s loan permanent. Should that happen, the forward — who scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United — may find himself heading back to England once again.
As the reigning La Liga champions assess their squad plans for next season, Rashford’s dream move risks turning into yet another uncertain chapter in his career.
