Rwanda Beat Zimbabwe to Overtake Nigeria

Rwanda players celebrate after Gilbert Mugisha’s free-kick goal in 1-0 win over Zimbabwe during World Cup qualifier

Rwanda kept their 2026 World Cup qualifying dreams alive with a narrow 1-0 win over Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

The result helps the Amavubis bounce back after their recent defeat to Nigeria, while also pushing the Super Eagles down to fourth place in the group standings.

Mugisha’s Free-Kick Seals the Win

Gilbert Mugisha proved to be the match-winner. Just before the half-time break, he fired home a powerful free-kick that left the Zimbabwe goalkeeper with no chance.

Both teams created opportunities in the second half, but neither could find the back of the net. Rwanda’s defense stood firm, protecting their slim lead until the final whistle.

Super Eagles Slip to Fourth Place

This victory takes Rwanda to 11 points, moving them into third position ahead of Nigeria, who now sit fourth with 10 points. The Super Eagles face South Africa in their next crucial fixture and must respond quickly to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Group Battle Intensifies

Elsewhere in the group, second-placed Benin Republic, also on 11 points, will host Lesotho later tonight. The outcome of that game could further shake up the standings as the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensifies across Africa.
