Sergio Reguilón Set to Join Inter Miami as Jordi Alba Retires

Sergio Reguilón joins Inter Miami as Jordi Alba retires from professional football

Inter Miami are closing in on the signing of Sergio Reguilón, following the retirement of Spanish legend Jordi Alba.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United full-back is finalizing personal terms with the MLS side, which is co-owned by David Beckham and captained by Lionel Messi. A two-year contract announcement is expected soon.

Reguilón to Replace Alba at Inter Miami

At 28, Reguilón will bring energy and European experience to Miami’s backline. The Spaniard, who also had a loan stint at Brentford, is set to replace Alba — who announced his retirement after a glittering 16-year professional career.

Despite Alba’s departure, Inter Miami remain ambitious and are planning additional European signings in the next transfer window to strengthen their squad for the 2025 MLS season.

Jordi Alba Bows Out After a Legendary Career

Alba confirmed his retirement via Instagram, expressing gratitude and peace with his decision:

“The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter of my life. I do so with peace and happiness, knowing I’ve given my all. Thank you to all the fans for your kindness — you taught me that the shirt isn’t just worn, it’s felt.”

Alba’s career saw him win six LaLiga titles, a Champions League, and countless domestic honours with Barcelona, where he formed a legendary partnership with Messi.

Busquets Also Calls Time on His Career

Alba’s announcement comes shortly after Sergio Busquets also retired. The 37-year-old was part of Barcelona’s iconic midfield trio alongside Xavi and Andrés Iniesta, winning every major title including the World Cup and European Championship.

Busquets shared an emotional message thanking football for an incredible two-decade journey. He remains one of the most decorated and intelligent midfielders of his generation.

What This Means for Inter Miami and Messi

With Alba and Busquets retiring, Inter Miami are entering a transition phase. Messi, now 38, may soon be the last remaining member of Barcelona’s golden generation still active in professional football.

Miami’s management is reportedly targeting two European reinforcements to maintain competitiveness and support Messi ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
