Serie A referee cameras will be used for the first time in the Juventus vs Inter Milan match, providing fans with a unique perspective and enhancing VAR coverage. The Italian league confirmed the move on Tuesday.
The micro-camera will be mounted on the referee’s headset. It will capture footage during warm-ups, live match situations such as free kicks, and replays. Selected footage will also be available to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and broadcast live.
Serie A Referee Cameras: How They Work
The technology was first tested during the Club World Cup in July. FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) are promoting these cameras to improve match coverage and refereeing transparency.
Benefits for Fans and the League
Serie A Chief Executive Luigi De Siervo said the cameras provide supporters with a new perspective. “Serie A has always embraced new technologies. They improve television viewing, promote the league globally, and ensure refereeing transparency,” De Siervo said.
The Premier League will also trial referee cameras in selected matches this season, according to the BBC.
