Spain Boss Compares Arsenal’s Mikel Merino to Pedri and Rodri After Bulgaria Win

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has heaped huge praise on Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino, claiming he is now performing at the same level as Pedri and Rodri.

Merino was the standout performer as Spain cruised to a 4-0 win over Bulgaria in their World Cup qualifier, scoring twice to move the national team one step closer to securing their spot at the 2026 World Cup.

The Arsenal star has now netted six goals in his last four international appearances, making him one of Europe’s most in-form midfielders during qualifying. Only Erling Haaland and Memphis Depay have scored more in this campaign.

Speaking after the match, De la Fuente said:

“He is an exceptionally complete player with great adaptability. There are few players as versatile as him, and it is a privilege to have him with us.
He reads opponents and situations superbly. He is a fantastic footballer, on the same level as Pedri, Oyarzabal, Rodri… we have an outstanding squad.”

Merino confirmed he has been working on improving his goalscoring output at both Arsenal and on the international stage.

“It’s not a coincidence, but you need a little bit of luck to score. I’ve been wanting to improve this aspect of my game for years and be more decisive with assists. I hope I can keep this streak going.”

With confidence high and Spain closing in on qualification, Merino returns to Arsenal looking to carry his sensational form into the Premier League.
