Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker is counting on left-back Omega Mdaka to maintain his strong start to the season ahead of a key Betway Premiership clash with Mamelodi Sundowns at Athlone Stadium tomorrow.
The 20-year-old Mdaka has impressively filled the gap left by Fawaaz Basadien, combining attacking support with defensive discipline. Already this season, he has earned two Player of the Match awards and will face his former teammate Basadien, who now plays for Sundowns on the opposite flank.
“I’ve said it before — he didn’t get that many opportunities when Fawaaz was here, and obviously Fawaaz leaving opened the door for him. He’s been absolutely brilliant since,” Barker said.
Mdaka’s Rise Through the Ranks
A product of the Kaizer Chiefs Academy, Mdaka has demonstrated a cultured left foot and relentless energy. Barker praised his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.
“He plays with his heart on his sleeve — a lot of energy, a lot of intensity. He gets up and down, has a great left foot, defends well, helps us in attack… So very, very happy for Omega,” Barker added.
Young Talent Langelihle Phili Shines
Stellenbosch FC’s other promising talent, 19-year-old Langelihle Phili, has also impressed. Named in South Africa’s preliminary squad for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, Phili has scored three goals this season, including winners against AmaZulu and Marumo Gallants.
Barker highlighted the importance of managing the squad while giving young players the right opportunities:
“He’s taken his opportunity, so I can only be happy and pleased for him and what he’s doing for the team,” Barker said.
Conclusion
With Mdaka and Phili showing early-season form, Stellenbosch FC aims to challenge reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns and continue their push in the Betway Premiership.
