Tuchel Shocks Albania With Bold Tactics As England Seal Perfect Qualifying Run

England extended their flawless World Cup Qualifying campaign to eight wins from eight after a 2–0 victory over Albania, but the talking point of the night was Thomas Tuchel’s extraordinary tactical experiment.

The Three Lions survived a nervy start in Tirana before Harry Kane struck twice to secure the win at the Air Albania Stadium. However, it was Tuchel’s unexpected setup that confused Albania and sparked debate about England’s tactical future.

Tuchel had earlier insisted that he could not deploy Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane in overlapping central positions because they naturally drift into the same spaces. He also highlighted the difficulty of fitting other No10-style players like Cole Palmer, Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers into the same system without positional clashes.

Against Albania, the manager surprised everyone by reversing his stance completely as he effectively played almost the entire team in the No10 position.

England’s average position map from the match showed most of the attacking players operating in similar central pockets of space, creating overloads that Albania struggled to contain. With constant rotations and unusual movements, England repeatedly found openings. One debutant even appeared in a position far from his natural role.

Despite the experimental setup, Harry Kane remained decisive. The captain scored both goals, ensuring England maintained their perfect record in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

The victory strengthens England’s grip on Group K but also raises new questions. Will this fluid No10-heavy system become Tuchel’s long-term approach? Can traditional wide players adapt? How will emerging talents be fitted into such a compact creative structure?

What is clear is that Tuchel has found a temporary fix to his selection dilemma, even if it contradicts what he said earlier in the week. England remain unbeaten, unpredictable and entertaining as they continue their journey toward the 2026 World Cup.
