Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Altay Bayindir will retain his spot in goal for Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City, despite the arrival of new signing Senne Lammens.
Bayindir, 27, has started all three of United’s Premier League games this season. He will once again get the nod, while Andre Onana — who struggled for form at Old Trafford — has departed on loan to Trabzonspor.
United signed 23-year-old Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day for £18.2 million, but Amorim insists Bayindir remains his first choice for now.
“It is a different league, a different country, different training, different ball. They will fight for the position, but for me in this game it is clear: Altay will start,” Amorim told reporters.
The Portuguese manager also explained why United chose Lammens over Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez:
“We have an option that can give us different things in the moment, but also has great potential to be our goalkeeper for many years.”
Injury Concerns
New signing Matheus Cunha, along with Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot, will miss the clash through injury. Amorim admitted he is unsure of their exact return dates but praised their determination in recovery.
Background
Bayindir made headlines during United’s opener against Arsenal when he misjudged a Declan Rice corner, leading to a goal. Despite that, Amorim believes his experience and resilience make him the right choice for the derby.
