Real Madrid’s Champions League encounter with Benfica was dramatically halted following a racism allegation involving Vinícius Júnior.
The Brazilian forward, 25, had just put Madrid ahead with a stunning curling effort at the Estádio da Luz when tensions escalated on the pitch. His celebration in front of the home supporters sparked complaints from several Benfica players, leading to a brief confrontation.
Shortly after, Vinicius became involved in a heated exchange with Gianluca Prestianni. The Benfica winger was seen pulling his shirt over his mouth during the altercation, prompting Vinicius to report an alleged racist remark to referee Francois Letexier.
UEFA Anti-Racism Protocol Activated
Letexier immediately signalled the activation of UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, making the crossed-arms gesture before suspending the match. Play was halted for nearly ten minutes as officials addressed the situation.
A visibly upset Vinicius walked off the pitch and briefly sat in the dugout while discussions took place. Benfica head coach José Mourinho was seen attempting to calm the Real Madrid forward.
The match eventually resumed, though Vinicius continued to face boos from sections of the home crowd each time he touched the ball.
Late Drama and Mourinho’s Red Card
The drama did not end there. In the 85th minute, Mourinho was sent off after protesting against Vinicius remaining on the pitch. During stoppage time, Letexier was also forced to remove an object thrown onto the field by supporters.
Real Madrid held on to secure a 1-0 victory, giving them a first-leg advantage.
Strong Reactions After the Match
Speaking after the game, Vinicius took to social media to condemn racism, describing racists as “cowards” and criticising what he called a poorly executed protocol.
Teammates also voiced their support. Federico Valverde described the alleged remark as “pathetic,” while Kylian Mbappé insisted there is “no place for racism” in football and called for firm action.
Mourinho, however, stated that Prestianni denied the accusation, saying both players offered different versions of events and that the matter should be handled independently.
UEFA is now expected to review the incident as attention turns to potential disciplinary action.
