Newcastle United’s record signing Yoane Wissa will have to wait for his debut after picking up an injury on international duty. Manager Eddie Howe confirmed on Friday that the forward will not feature in Saturday’s Premier League game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wissa joined Newcastle from Brentford in a £55 million deal after a lengthy transfer saga. The 29-year-old, who scored 45 goals in 137 Premier League appearances for the Bees, impressed for DR Congo during the international break with goals against South Sudan and Senegal before suffering a knee injury.
Howe Confirms Injury Setback
Asked about Wissa’s availability, Howe said:
“Unfortunately not, no. He won’t make this game, I saw him for the first time yesterday. He’s feeling the effects of the injury he sustained just before he came off. He will go away for tests and maybe see a specialist. Unfortunately I can’t give you that update.”
Howe praised the new signing’s qualities, adding:
“An established Premier League goalscorer is very difficult to find and recruit. Wissa has got great qualities, and I really admire the journey he has been on to get to this point because it has not been easy for him.”
More Injury Concerns for Newcastle
Howe also revealed that midfielder Jacob Ramsey faces a spell on the sidelines after an ankle injury in the 0-0 draw against Leeds United.
“His ankle swelled up at halftime and he had to come off. Unfortunately I think he will be missing until after the next international break so that is a big blow,” Howe said.
Newcastle’s Tough Start
The Magpies have picked up just two points from their opening three Premier League matches. Howe will be hoping his side can turn things around despite the injury setbacks.
