As new head coach Michael Malone continues to build his first season roster, the former Denver Nuggets head coach added to the Tar Heels 2026 recruiting class with the addition of four star small forward Kevin Thomas. Thomas according to 247sports is ranked as the 79th overall player, 32nd small forward, and 13th best player from the state of Florida.

Thomas was originally committed to LSU head coach Matt McMahon, but after the Tigers fired McMahon to hire Will Wade instead, Thomas reopened his recruitment. The four-star recruit visited North Carolina this week and obviously enjoyed the experience so much that he went on and committed to the team. His commitment brings the Tar Heel 2026 class up to three along with Maximo Adams and Malloy Smith, while also bringing the roster total back up to 13 after the departure of Maxim Logue.

Last season, Thomas, a 6’6 195 lb forward, averaged 15.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game for Weston Sagemont Prep. Thomas looks like a great developmental player and should provide depth on the wing, which is lacking after the transfers of Luka Bogavac and Jonathan Powell. He also has the potential to be a multi-year player for the Tar Heels assuming he accepts the role that Coach Malone has in mind for him.
