Manchester United have one representative in FIFA’s official 2026 World Cup Team of the Tournament after a difficult competition for several of the club’s international stars.
Many United players saw their countries eliminated earlier than expected during the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot were part of the Portugal squad that entered the competition with hopes of making a deep run.
However, Portugal were knocked out by Spain in the round of 16.
Spain then went on to win the tournament after beating Argentina 1-0 following extra time in the final.
Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal as the European champions lifted football’s biggest prize for the second time.
Despite Portugal’s early exit, one Manchester United player still produced enough quality to earn recognition from FIFA.
United star named in FIFA World Cup Team of the Tournament
FIFA have officially named Lisandro Martinez in their 2026 World Cup Team of the Tournament .
The Manchester United defender was selected at centre-back alongside France international Dayot Upamecano.
Martinez played a key role as Argentina reached another World Cup final after winning the competition in 2022.
The 28-year-old brought his usual aggression, composure and ability on the ball to Lionel Scaloni’s defence throughout the tournament.
Martinez even scored a stunning goal against a difficult Cape Verde side in the Round of 32.
He also featured in the final against Spain before his evening was cut short by injury.
Martinez was unable to complete the match as Argentina eventually suffered defeat in extra time.
His injury immediately created concern at Old Trafford, especially with Manchester United already preparing for the new Premier League season.
Even so, his inclusion in FIFA’s best eleven underlines the level of his performances across the competition.
The full team also includes Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Rodri and Michael Olise.
Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro join Martinez in defence, while Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha completes the side.
Martinez’s selection provides Manchester United with a major individual honour from the tournament despite several other players seeing their campaigns end early.
