All of the New England Patriots’ upcoming slate of games and dates have been made official with the release of the 2026 NFL schedule on Thursday.
It’s crazy how much can change in a year.
The Patriots were coming off their second straight 4-13 season with a mere hope of a turnaround under Mike Vrabel around this time last year. Now, they’re the defending AFC champions after winning the AFC East division and advancing all the way to Super Bowl LX last season.
A snap of a finger and it feels like old times for the six-time Super Bowl-winning Patriots franchise. But can they carry that same momentum with them into the 2026 season when faced with a far more difficult schedule? They can silence any remaining critics with another successful run.
Here are seven initial takeaways from the schedule:
A Super Bowl rematch in the opener
The Patriots could make a statement right out of the gate by going on the road and beating the Seattle Seahawks in a revenge game for their ugly 29-13 loss at Super Bowl LX. There aren’t many fans of the Patriots opening up the season with such a tough matchup, but it could ultimately work out in their favor.
If there were ever a chance of an upset, it would be early in the season. Brian Fleury is the Seahawks’ new offensive coordinator after Klint Kubiak left for a head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders. Going toe-to-toe with a talented Patriots defense is a tall task for a first-time offensive coordinator, regardless of game location.
Going overseas to face the Lions
The Patriots are headed to Munich in Week 10 for a showdown with the Detroit Lions. They will technically be the road team in the game, but given New England’s longstanding presence in Germany, it should feel like a glorified home game for the team.
Don’t let the Lions’ failure to make the playoffs last season fool you. They still finished the 2025 season with a winning record (9-8), and they have one of the most explosive offensive rosters in the league. Figuring out ways to slow them down will be a tall task for Patriots defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr.
Patriots will have five primetime games
One way to clearly tell that the Patriots are no longer the laughingstock of the NFL is the fact that they have five primetime games on the 2026 NFL schedule. Drake Maye is emerging as an elite franchise quarterback after finishing last season as the NFL MVP runner-up behind Matthew Stafford.
But the climb has never felt steeper than the upcoming schedule with primetime matchups against the Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Chargers.
Road warriors sequel?
It will have to be another road warriors run with the Patriots having nine games on the road this season. This was a team that embraced being on the road in 2025 and went a perfect 8-0. They will be in great shape as a football team if they find a way to recapture that same magic in 2026.

A Week 11 bye week
The bye week will come several weeks earlier for the Patriots this season. Instead of waiting all the way until Week 14, the Patriots will get their one-week break in Week 11. It will follow the team’s international trip to Germany for the Week 10 game against the Lions.
The toughest stretch starts on Week 1
The toughest stretch for the Patriots will start immediately with the road rematch against the Seattle Seahawks. They’ll then be back home for a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, before going back out on the road for matchups with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills.
It’s a brutal stretch on the schedule against four contending teams, and it could have a major impact on the Patriots’ season.
This is not 2025
It’s no secret that the Patriots’ 2025 schedule was favorable on paper. They won’t get that same fortune in the 2026 season. Maye will have to continue to grow as a player, and the team as a whole will have to step up to survive the sharks awaiting them on the schedule.
The good news is they’ll have four games in total against two rebuilding teams in the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. With that said, it will be up to the Patriots to prove critics of their 2025 schedule right or wrong this year.
