The full San Francisco 49ers schedule is officially out for the 2026 season.
There weren’t any major surprises, but the 17-game slate comes with a handful of things that jump out as the 49ers look to return to the postseason. This year will likely be a much tougher schedule that features games against AFC Super Bowl contenders like the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers. They’ll have those games on top of two international bouts, their typical six-game NFC West schedule, and NFC Super Bowl hopefuls like the Philadelphia Eagles.
Here are our takeaways from the schedule:
Almost no travel after Australia game
The NFL rewarded the 49ers with a long homestand after their long trip to Melbourne, Australia. They come home in Week 2 to face the Miami Dolphins to begin a three-game stretch of home games that also features the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos. The 49ers follow that with a road trip to Seattle, and then they’re home for a Monday Night Football tilt with the Washington Commanders. That means the 49ers will go to Australia, and then they won’t leave the Pacific Time Zone again until they visit the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7 on Oct. 25.
Midseason Bye
Speaking of that trip to Atlanta, it precedes the 49ers’ Week 8 Bye. The 49ers’ week off is advantageous in part because it’s in the middle of the year which will keep San Francisco from playing long stretches without a break. Splitting the season virtually in half is usually preferred over having a very early or very late Bye. Atlanta is one of two visits to the East Coast for San Francisco and they’ll follow that long trip with a full week off to mitigate some of the impact a cross-country journey can have.
Five primetime games
The 49ers are playing five games in primetime. We knew about two because their international contests were announced before the schedule release. They added three more when the schedule became official with a Monday Night Football showdown vs. the Washington Commanders in Week 6, Week 15 vs. the Los Angeles Chargers for Thursday Night Football and Week 17 vs. the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. It’s a small surprise they didn’t reach the maximum of six, but they have some fun primetime showdowns this year.
Softest stretch of 49ers schedule
This year’s schedule will be significantly tougher than last year’s. With Super Bowl contenders sprinkled throughout there’s no clear outlier “easy” span of the 18-week slate. There are games against the Dolphins and Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium immediately after the team gets back from Australia. For a stretch longer than three games we have to go toward the middle of the season from Weeks 6-9 when the 49ers host the Commanders, visit the Falcons, get a week off, then host the Las Vegas Raiders. Even that could wind up being a difficult trio of games depending on how well the Commanders bounce back, what the Falcons do in Year 3 of Michael Penix, and how the Raiders look under new head coach Klint Kubiak.
Toughest stretch of 49ers schedule
This was much easier to find. The 49ers have a three-game span from Weeks 12-14 where they visit the Dallas Cowboys, go to Mexico City to face the Minnesota Vikings, and then come home to play the Seattle Seahawks. After going to the East Coast to visit the New York Giants, they are home vs. the Los Angeles Rams, on the road for a short week at the Los Angeles Chargers, on the road in Kansas City, and then home vs. the Eagles. Yikes!
No chance for an East Coast stay
We speculated the 49ers might get a chance for an East Coast stay. Their only two East Coast trips are in Week 7 at Atlanta and Week 13 in New York. There won’t be any need to mitigate cross-country travel by staying out East since they have a Bye after the Falcons game and a home showdown vs. the Rams after going to New York.
Chance for a Midwest stay
Instead of staying out East to limit travel between a pair of East Coast games, the 49ers may stay in the Midwest after visiting the Dallas Cowboys. They are in Dallas and then they’ll be in Mexico City the next week. In 2022 when the 49ers went to Mexico City they stayed in Colorado Springs, Colorado to help their bodies acclimate to the altitude they’ll be playing in at Estadio Banorte. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they do something similar after they play in Dallas. They could limit travel with a short flight to Denver for a week before going to south of the border.
