Ex-New York Giants assistant arrested, charged with domestic battery

Former New York Giants assistant coach David Merritt, now an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery in Overland Park, Kansas.

The victim, the Kansas City Star reports, is Merritt’s own daughter.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office filed a complaint against David Lee Merritt Sr., 54, of Stillwell, accusing him of “unlawfully, knowingly, or recklessly” causing bodily harm to a daughter, which constitutes a domestic violence offense, according to court documents.

Merritt, 54, has been the defensive backs coach on Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City since 2019. He began his NFL coaching career in 2001 with the New York Jets.

He was hired by the New York Giants in 2004 when Tom Coughlin took over as the head coach. Merritt was a member of Coughlin’s staff for 12 years, while Coughlin was at the helm, and then for several years after Coughlin parted ways with the team.

A Chiefs spokesman says they are aware of the situation, but offered no further comment.
