Urban Meyer fights instincts and allegiances to praise Michigan

It’s well established that anyone associated with Michigan or Ohio State won’t go out of their way to say anything nice about their heated rival. Former Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer knows the rule as well as anyone, but was recently compelled to make an exception.

The Wolverines made a fast break hire this winter, luring Kyle Whittingham away from Utah in the wake of the Sherrone Moore situation. Meyer knew that every fiber in his being told him that he couldn’t be happy about the move, but he had to give credit where it was due.

“Yeah, I’m a Buckeye, so my first thought was, ‘What?’” Meyer expressed to On3. “He’s my friend. Kyle and I are really close, but it didn’t take long for me to put two and two together. Not only did I tell him that I think it was a great move, but it was exactly what that school in Ann Arbor needed.”

Meyer took his support for the move one step further, likely to the chagrin of Buckeyes fans.

“They fell into the perfect guy,” Meyer admitted.

Whittingham finished 177-88 in 22 seasons as Utah’s head coach.
