More than four months after their 2025 season ended, the Pittsburgh Steelers finally locked in their quarterback for 2026.

To nobody’s surprise, it is Aaron Rodgers, who’s 42 now and turns 43 in December.

It’s another one-year deal for Rodgers, who returns to the Steelers after playing last season on a one-year deal for them. At least he got a big raise this time around after leading them to the AFC North title and the playoffs last year.

However, Pittsburgh is merely kicking the quarterback can down the road for another year. There remains no long-term plan under center for a team that desperately needs one after going nine years without a playoff win.

“A one-year deal for a 42-year-old quarterback is their official plan going forward, and it is absolutely perfect,” Colin Cowherd said on Monday’s episode of “The Herd.” “They’ve gone from being known in the 70s and 80s as a great defense to being defensive about it… It’s just not that difficult.”

Cowherd blames the Steelers for continuously spending too much money on defense and not taking the quarterback position seriously enough.

They’ve had numerous chances to upgrade at head coach and quarterback over the last few years, passing up on Kyler Murray, Sam Darnold, Jaxson Dart and others. Instead, they settled for familiarity and likely mediocrity in Rodgers and Mike McCarthy.

So if Pittsburgh goes another year without a postseason win, they’ll have no one to blame but themselves.
