The New Orleans Saints have yet to reach a final verdict on what they’re going to do with Alvin Kamara this offseason.
They’re “getting close,” though, according to head coach Kellen Moore’s recent comments to reporters.
Kamara is on the downslope of his career, and the Saints brought in free agent RB Travis Etienne this offseason from the Jacksonville Jaguars. That puts Kamara in a precarious spot as far as the roster is concerned.
It also means the Saints have to decide what to do next. They have four main options, according to ESPN’s Katherine Terrell.
The simplest move from an execution standpoint is to keep Kamara on his current contract.
“If they keep him at his current contract, he will count $10.4 million against the salary cap,” Terrell writes.
They could try and get Kamara to take a pay cut, which he would potentially do if he simply wanted to stay in New Orleans and not worry about finding a new NFL home.
The Saints could cut Kamara, which they would do after June 1 for salary cap reasons.
“Releasing him after June 1 would save $3.3 million in 2026 cap space,” Terrell writes.
The fourth option is to pursue a trade. Kamara is still a dual-threat running back, but at his age and with his contract, it might not be the easiest kind of deal to pull off.
Regardless, the Saints have to do something. It doesn’t seem likely they’ll keep Kamara around on his current salary, so one of the other three choices is probably where this is heading.
That leaves some suspense for Saints fans even as the NFL calendar approaches a bit of a quieter time. There’s going to be some noise on Kamara soon enough.
