Texas softball drops Game 1 of Super Regional to Arizona State

No. 2 overall seed Texas is on the verge of elimination from the NCAA Postseason Softball Tournament after a Game 1 loss to Arizona State in the Super Regional at McCombs Field in Austin, Texas. The Sun Devils beat the Longhorns 4-1, putting the defending national champion on the brink.

Texas ace pitcher Teagan Kavan struggled against ASU, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks. The junior from Iowa was the Most Outstanding Player of last year’s WCWS.

One the other side, ASU ace pitcher Kenzie Brown was dominant, allowing just one run on four hits in a complete game that included 10 strikeouts. Catcher Samantha Swan powered the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.

The Longhorns must now win consecutive games against the Sun Devils to win the best of three series and advance to another Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

ASU has been a giant-killer so far in the postseason. The Sun Devils upset Texas Tech to win the Big 12 tournament, then took down Texas A&M in the College Station in the Regional.
