Meet Louisville-area high school girls athlete of the week nominees

The nominees for this week’s Courier Journal girls athlete of the week delivered on Louisville-area tracks, lacrosse fields and softball diamonds.

Voting is underway for The Courier Journal’s girls athlete of the week. The poll closes at 6 p.m. Thursday, and the winner will be announced Friday.

Here are the nominees:

Ellie Beam, Kentucky Country Day lacrosse

Senior had five goals and an assist in a 13-9 victory over Sacred Heart on May 20 in the KHSAA state championship match at Great Crossing.

Grace Bethel, Male track and field

Junior won the 100- and 200-meter dashes in the KHSAA Class 3A State Championships on May 23 at UK. She also helped the Bulldogs finish second in the 4×200 relay.

Lucy Knabel, South Oldham softball

Junior was 4 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in a 12-5 victory over Oldham County on May 20 in the 29th District Tournament final, giving the Dragons their first district title since 2002.

Tamari Oliver, Central track and field

Junior won the shot put in the KHSAA Class 3A State Championships on May 23 at UK with a throw of 42 feet, 9.75 inches.

Natalie Svidal, Walden track and field

Senior won the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump at the KHSAA Class A State Championships on May 21 at UK. She swept the three events for the third straight year.
