Georgia baseball reacts to winning SEC Tournament title

The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team is SEC Tournament champions after earning an 11-1 run-rule victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks. Georgia beat Arkansas after waiting through a two-hour-plus rain delay. Georgia won the SEC during the regular season and won the SEC Tournament with wins over Mississippi State, Florida and Arkansas.

“I remember looking back at when I as at Mississippi State and Arkansas, and we had chances to do it and going, wow, it’s almost harder to accomplish one of those than it is probably to get to Omaha at times just because the league is so unforgiving, and man, nobody in this league lets you up off the mat if you are stumbling or falling down,” Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson said after winning the SEC championship. “It’s really, really hard to do. I don’t know how many teams have done this, but it’s really hard to do.”

Georgia jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead over Arkansas behind doubles from Rylan Lujo and Brennan Hudson. Georgia’s Jack Arcamone also had a two-run home run. Georgia pitcher Paul Farley threw four scoreless innings as Georgia controlled the entire game.

Georgia catcher Daniel Jackson was named as the SEC Tournament MVP. “I couldn’t be more pumped,” Jackson said after taking home the SEC title. “Honestly, I feel the most special thing is, I feel like I got this because we won as a team out there. Winning the regular season and winning the tournament, that means more to me than anything. It has been just an awesome regular season and now tournament. It’s super exciting.”

Next up for the Bulldogs is the NCAA Tournament. Georgia has earned a national seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host the Athens Regional as Georgia looks to advance to host a super regional. The Bulldogs’ ultimate goal is to return to the College World Series. Georgia will find out who it plays in the NCAA Tournament at noon ET on Monday, May 25.
