Kimi Antonelli has officially earned the respect of the Formula 1 grid. The 19-year-old Mercedes prodigy is currently dominating the 2026 season, recently securing his fourth consecutive victory at the Canadian Grand Prix. But if anyone expects the veteran champions to help the rookie navigate his first title fight, they are going to be very disappointed.
During the post-race press conference in Montreal, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were asked what advice they would offer Antonelli. Instead of sharing a veteran blueprint for success, their answers proved that their ruthless competitive instincts are still very much alive.
“We Are Competitors”
When a reporter invited Hamilton and Verstappen to pass down some wisdom to the young championship leader, Hamilton immediately shut the idea down with a laugh.
“I think you forget that we’re competitors,” the seven-time world champion stated.
Recognizing Antonelli’s massive 43-point lead in the standings, Hamilton bluntly added, “He’s already doing a great job. I’m not going to give him any more pointers!”.
While Verstappen also sat on the panel, Hamilton’s response perfectly captured the mood of the older generation. They might respect Antonelli’s generational talent, but they are absolutely not going to make his path to the championship any easier.
The 2007 Comparison
After laughing off the request for advice, Hamilton actually offered a very candid reflection on his own rookie title campaign. He looked back at his explosive 2007 season with McLaren, where he fought for the championship as a 22-year-old rookie.
Hamilton pointed out a massive difference between his early days and Antonelli’s current situation at Mercedes. According to the Ferrari driver, Antonelli has a much better safety net.
“I don’t think I had the same support system that he has, for example, today in a place that I worked at,” Hamilton admitted.
He specifically praised Mercedes boss Toto Wolff for building a stable environment around the teenager. “Toto did a great job of surrounding you with the right support, and I definitely didn’t feel that”.
Hamilton noted that while his old McLaren team was nice, they lacked the right elements to help a rookie stay mentally stable and guided during an intense title fight.
Hamilton famously lost that 2007 championship to Kimi Raikkonen by a single point on the final day of the season. He knows exactly how brutal the pressure can get. But as a rival driver trying to drag Ferrari back to the front of the pack, Hamilton is leaving Antonelli to figure out the rest of the 2026 season entirely on his own.
