Back to back Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain can be a role model for Bayern Munich, former Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said.

“The lesson for Bayern is not that you have to make the most expensive transfer but the smartest one,” Rummenigge told publishers Münchner Merkur/tz.

Rummenigge said that PSG became really successful “when they turned from an expensive group of stars to a true team.”

PSG failed to win the elite event with superstars like Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. The maiden success last year came after all had departed, and PSG beat Arsenal on penalties on Saturday to retain the title.

Rumenigge said the example of PSG shows that “you don’t always have to look at the English and Spanish for inspiration” and that Bayern should keep following this example.

“We have an outstanding coach, a clear sporting vision, and we should continue on this path with [coach] vincent Kompany,” he said.

Bayern lost in the semi-finals against PSG, drawing 1-1 in Munich after losing the first leg 5-4 in a Paris thriller Rummenigge named the best match of the whole Champions League season.

“That was football at its best,” he said. “This match has shown what our team is capable of, and we need to build on that consistently with our coach.”
