Another week, another bunch of high-profile caddie changes on the PGA Tour.
Golfweek has learned that eight-time Tour winner and past FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel has split with Micah Fugitt and has veteran caddie James Edmonson signed up for the next few weeks, he said. Also, Tony Finau has returned to Giff Nielsen on the bag after a short stint with John Ellis, the former bagman for Wyndham Clark. Ellis confirmed with Golfweek that he is taking over the bag of Max Homa, who last week had a friend on the bag after splitting with Lance Bennett.
Horschel, 39, is returning from hip surgery last season. He ranks 94th in the FedEx Cup standings this year and his lone top-10 finish was in New Orleans at the team event. He’s missed the cut in two of his last three starts, and is in the field this week at the Memorial Tournament as a sponsor’s exemption. He is seeking to jump-start his season at a course where he is a past champion, having won the title in 2022. Fugitt was in his second stint working for Horschel. In their first go-round, Horschel won the BMW Championship and Tour Championship in 2014 to take home the FedEx Cup. Horschel said he is giving Edmondson, who worked for Ryan Palmer for several years and was on the bag of Brice Garnett last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge, a trial run and said it’s possible he and Fugitt may reconnect again.
“Simple as this, I said we are going to take a break for right now; obviously that means we are split, but that doesn’t mean that I may not work with Micah again, or in a couple month’s time I may want Micah to come back on the bag,” Horschel said.
Ellis had served as an assistant coach at Oregon during Clark’s senior season and joined him as his caddie during his rookie season on the Korn Ferry Tour. He was by Clark’s side for three Tour wins, most notably the 2023 U.S. Open. But they parted ways in March, ending an eight-year partnership. When Clark won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson two weeks ago, Ellis greeted him behind the 18th green with a big hug.
Ellis had been on the bag for Finau since the RBC Heritage in April. Finau, a six-time Tour winner, finished T-6 at the CJ Cup but missed the cut last week. He’s been in search of a full-time caddie since last summer when veteran caddie Mark Urbanek jumped to the bag of Collin Morikawa ahead of the British Open in July. Nielsen started the season with Finau, who ranks 78th in the FedEx Cup, and is also in the Memorial field this week on a sponsor’s exemption.
In other caddie news, Carl Smith is back on the bag for Sahith Theegala after missing last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
