Premier League clubs have been urged to take the chance to sign Eduardo Camavinga this summer.
The midfielder could be allowed to leave Real Madrid following Jose Mourinho’s return to the club.
Camavinga made just 16 starts in LaLiga last season under Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa.
His struggles at club level also saw the 23-year-old left out of France’s World Cup squad.
Having signed for Real Madrid in 2021, Camavinga has already made 223 appearances for the club.
He has also won 11 trophies including two Champions Leagues, two LaLiga titles and the Club World Cup.
Although he still has three years remaining on his current deal, a move away from Los Blancos could now be on the cards.
Camavinga’s future
European football journalist Andy Brassell has now tipped Camavinga to resurrect his career in England.
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, he revealed exactly where it has gone wrong for him in the Spanish capital.
Brassell explained: “I think if we’re looking at where it started going wrong for Camavinga at Real Madrid, we need to look back to not just those years of development where he didn’t really get to develop in one position, but I think we look back to the 24/25 season where Real Madrid didn’t win anything, just as was the case in the season just gone.
“Because they had so many defensive problems, not only did they have to use him at left-back more than they would have liked, but really it sort of affected the midfield as well.
“So you had Luka Modric approaching 40, playing far too many games in that season. Dani Ceballos, who I really like, a former Arsenal player of course, but not really of Real Madrid level, if we’re being completely honest.
“And so this left Camavinga, who looked like being part of this perfect midfield, along with his international team-mate, Aurelien Tchouameni, with (Federico) Valverde, with (Jude) Bellingham and all of a sudden it was a bit of a mess, really.
“The other thing with France is I sort of feel that Camavinga’s ideal position would be left of a midfield three and the fact that Adrien Rabiot, since the 2022 World Cup, has sort of made that position his own.
“He’s been brilliant in recent seasons, Rabiot. That has shunted Camavinga out of a place where he can potentially settle for the national team as well.
“Now, look, he can do so many other things. He passes the ball incredibly accurately, still lands way over 90 per cent of his passes. He can dribble with the ball, he can tackle, he’s a brilliant athlete.
“There’s so much to him. But really he needs to find a club where he’s going to play and play consistently.”
As well as his natural midfield role, Camavinga has also been deployed at centre-back and left-back on a regular basis for club and country.
Of his 43 appearances in all competitions last term, only 19 came in central midfield.
Meanwhile, the Rennes academy graduate even featured on both the left and right wing.
Who should sign Camavinga?
Brassell believes one Premier League giant could prove to be the ideal landing spot for Camavinga before the transfer window closes.
He continued: “Now, I wonder if Liverpool really is the right fit for him. Of course, you would have to find a way to fit him and Ryan Gravenberch in the same midfield. That’s a really important thing to do if he was going to end up at Liverpool.
“It could work though. We saw in Liverpool’s title winning season in 2024/25 that Gravenberch as a deep player really works.
“If you’re looking at Camavinga to the left of him, I think that could be quite an interesting fit. Maybe (Dominik) Szoboszlai on the other side if that was a midfield three.
“Of course, there are loads of different ways they could play it and I suspect they’ll rotate because Liverpool are hoping to be very successful this season and there’ll be 60-odd games.
“So there will be time for Camavinga to adapt. But that for me is the most important thing. The ability is there.
“They’re buying low because he’s not had a great season at Real Madrid particularly. The season just gone was undoubtedly his worst one. There’s no doubt about that. And he had his difficulties the season before.
“But you’re looking at a player that if you go back even 12 months, Real Madrid would not have counted in selling. There’s no way, but now they’re needing to regenerate the squad. They’re looking for where they can make money. He’s still a player of value because he’s got a great reputation all over the world.
“So I think this is the moment for a Premier League club to come in and take advantage of the situation. Maybe get a deal done around the £60million mark, something like that.
“And given that he’s only 23, given that you can get a great decade of service out of him, you just have to fully commit to Camavinga and get in there, say this guy is going to play for me in this position and make him the best in the world in that position or close because that’s what he’s got the potential to be.”
Liverpool are fast approaching a potential period of transition for their midfield.
Both Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones are set to enter the final year of their current Anfield deals this summer.
Meanwhile, both Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai will be out of contract in 2028, as it stands.
New manager Andoni Iraola has already added winger Victor Munoz to his squad but is yet to strengthen the side in midfield.
