Former Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves has questioned Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim’s tactics. He says Amorim does not fully understand his job after the club’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
Hargreaves criticized Amorim for leaving Kobbie Mainoo on the bench. He called it a costly decision. He also questioned the use of Bruno Fernandes as a defensive midfielder, saying the current formation is not working.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Hargreaves suggested some changes. He advised leaving Benjamin Sesko on the bench, as the striker is not ready for Premier League football. He recommended trying Bryan Mbeumo upfront instead.
“Where do you want to start? There are a lot of issues. How Kobbie Mainoo doesn’t play in this team I’ll never know. He came on and in half an hour he was probably their best player. So first of all, he has to play,” Hargreaves said.
“Sesko is not ready. Mbeumo is top, Cunha is top. Bruno cannot play as a central defensive midfielder anymore. He has to play as a No.10. The way it’s set up now, it is not working, so tweak it.”
Manchester United has played four Premier League games this season. They have won one, drawn one, and lost two. In the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, Phil Foden scored first, followed by two second-half goals from Erling Haaland.
Despite the criticisms, Amorim continues to play Bruno Fernandes alongside Manuel Ugarte. The 20-year-old Mainoo has yet to start a Premier League game this season.
Hargreaves concluded that changes are necessary if Manchester United wants to improve results.
