The Chicago Cubs won the Alex Bregman bidding war this past offseason, signing the superstar third baseman to a huge $140 million-plus deal.

He had the option of going back to join the Boston Red Sox, but instead chose to leave Boston after just one season and join the Cubs. With how the first month of the year has gone, that’s looked like a brilliant decision.

And as USA Today’s Bob Nightengale noted, this decision from Bregman wound up being a great one, as Nightengale called it the best decision of the offseason.

Alex Bregman made the best decision of MLB offseason

“Best decision, Alex Bregman,” Nightengale writes. “He was spared the Red Sox soap opera with manager Alex Cora, a close friend, and six of his coaches being dumped three weeks into the season.”

While there were plenty of other great moves made by teams and players around baseball, there might not be a better outcome for a player than Bregman.

Instead of re-signing with the Red Sox and coming back to what’s been a disastrous season so far, he’s on the Cubs, a top contender with a ton of positive momentum.

The Red Sox fired Alex Cora and five other coaches, there’s internal strife among the players, and the team is 13-20, with the worst record in the division.

The Cubs are 21-12, best record in the division, and Bregman is playing a little above average with a .701 OPS and 105 OPS+.

Bregman made the right call to leave the Red Sox and join the Cubs this past offseason. There might not be a better decision in baseball from any team or player, as Bregman avoided disaster and is on a World Series-caliber team as well.
