The Tennessee Vols’ opening matchup is set, and now we know who, when, and where the Vols will open up their seventh straight NCAA regional.

The 2 seed Vols open up on Friday against American tournament champion and 3 seed East Carolina Pirates on Friday at noon. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU. Mike Monaco and Ben McDonald will be on the call for ESPN.

Following the Vols and Pirates, North Carolina and Virginia Commonwealth will get underway at 5:00 pm ET in the 4 vs. 1 seed matchup.

As Terry noted, this is a tough draw for Tennessee. The Pirates come in as American tourney conference champions. They are a perennial tournament team, so they have talent year in and year out. They hosted in 2024, and it looked like the Vols might end up facing off with them on the way to their first national championship. However, Evansville stunned everyone and won the regional. Now, the programs finally meet up.

And it’s not just ECU who’s tough. Based on RPI, the entire region has one of the highest RPI’s in the entire tournament.

We’ll find out in the coming days who the Vols will send to the mound on Friday. It’s really a question of when they pitch Tegan Kuhns: in the opener or to have on deck vs. likely North Carolina if they win on Friday. With a bullpen that’s been very disappointing this year, getting the starting pitching right will be a crucial move for Josh Elander.
