Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray will be looked at as one player who can take the franchise to the next level if he beats out J.J. McCarthy for the starting role.

Many think that is a formality as Murray is simply the better quarterback right now, but still, you never know how things will play out over the course of a couple of months.

But for most, the job is Murray’s job to lose as he looks to be Kevin O’Connell’s starter for the 2026 season, and for NFL.com’s Eric Edholm, he thinks it could be the start of something rather special for Kyler.

“Murray’s turning 29 in August and clearly has a great opportunity in Minnesota: throwing to one of the best receivers in the game in Justin Jefferson and playing for a sharp offensive mind in Kevin O’Connell,” Edholm wrote. “Even with McCarthy there, Murray should have every chance to take the job, run with it and — eventually — cash in again.”

Will Murray win Vikings QB battle?

Given that we are still months away and the true competition hasn’t started yet, making a call can be tough.

But if a game were to be played today, I’d want Kyler as the starter for the Vikings, and I get the sense Minnesota might want that as well.

McCarthy losing out isn’t the end of the world, as he is still a young quarterback with plenty of talent; it’s just that the Vikings are in win-now mode, and Kyler gives the team the best chance at winning over McCarthy.

It will be a long battle that lasts into training camp, and I think it will be one that Murray wins.
