Lisandro Martinez played for Argentina against Switzerland as the nation looked to ensure progression into the semi-final of the 2026 World Cup, which is being held across North America.
Martinez, who has played an influential role in the side during the tournament so far, has played in five of Argentina’s six games at the competition so far, including each knockout stages.
Playing against Switzerland, the central defender made four tackles, four clearances, and won 80% of his ground duels as the South American side won the match 3-1, after extra-time.
He was also important in attacking situations too, with nine passes into the final third, three successful dribbles, and one shot on target.
Now, as the side begin to recover from the game the Argentine media have been reacting to the performance, providing their judgement on both Lisandro Martinez and the team as a whole.
La Nacion stated that “the team showed defensive lapses, although Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez were almost always there to intercept passes or cover for [Emiliano Martínez] Dibu”.
Clarin, on the other hand, gave the central defender a 7/10, explaining that it was “another very good game from Licha, both in marking, covering, intercepting, and of course, his constant presence in attack.”
The outlet also added that “he struggled a bit against Embolo at times, until he was sent off,” however.
Pagina 12 put forward a more critical interpretation, stating that “he struggled at times to contain Embolo, mainly due to the opponent’s speed.”
The publication also noted that “his distribution from the back, like Romero’s, was also poor. The defender had a great opportunity to score at the end of regulation time, but Kobel made the save.”
Argentina will face England in the semi-final of the World Cup in Atlanta on Wednesday.
