Bank of Scotland has paid tribute to Scott McTominay after his Scotland overhead kick helped secure their return to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It was a moment that already felt bigger than one match. McTominay’s strike against Denmark became the image of a nation ending a wait that stretched back to 1998.

Now, that moment has been turned into something Scotland fans can actually hold, though only a select few will ever get one.

Bank of Scotland turns Scott McTominay’s Scotland overhead kick into a rare World Cup note

As reported by the BBC, Bank of Scotland have unveiled a special £20 note featuring an image inspired by McTominay’s goal against Denmark.

“A limited edition £20 note featuring an image inspired by Scott McTominay’s famous overhead kick has been unveiled by the Bank of Scotland.

“It has been created to celebrate Scotland’s return to the World Cup after the team qualified for the men’s international tournament for the first time since 1998,” the BBC reported.

“The design combines traditional banknote elements with imagery of McTominay’s goal for Scotland against Denmark,” the BBC added.

Just 100 notes have been printed, making the release more of a collector’s item than a standard commemorative issue.

Of those, 50 will be made available through auctions, a prize draw and pop-up vault events in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Scott McTominay gave Scotland a World Cup moment worthy of more than one replay

McTominay’s own words reflected the emotional weight behind the tribute.

“Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans,” McTominay said.

He added, “Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”

The goal came early in Scotland’s 4-2 win over Denmark, a result that secured qualification for the men’s World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

The context made the strike even bigger. It was not just a highlight-reel finish; it became the moment that finally pushed Scotland back onto football’s biggest stage. Proceeds from the auctions and prize draw will support Crisis Scotland, adding a charitable purpose to the release.

Scotland will now face Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil in their World Cup group, and Bank of Scotland has made sure the image of the goal that helped get them there will last.
