Barcelona suffer major blow as top defensive target moves closer to new deal with current club

Barcelona’s hopes of signing Josko Gvardiol may have suffered a significant setback after fresh reports suggested that Manchester City are already working on securing the defender’s long-term future.

According to SPORT, the Premier League side has opened discussions with the Croatian international over a new contract, a move that would further strengthen their position amid growing interest from several European clubs.

It must be noted that although strengthening the defence is not currently Barcelona’s main priority, the club has continued to monitor opportunities in the market.

Gvardiol has emerged as one of the few defenders who perfectly match the profile Hansi Flick values, thanks to his ability to operate both as a centre-back and a left-back.

That versatility, combined with his age and experience, has made him an attractive option for Barcelona’s sporting department.

However, the latest developments suggest prising him away from Manchester City could become even more difficult.

Speculation regarding Gvardiol’s future increased recently after the defender was asked about his long-term plans.

While discussing his situation, the Croatian left the door slightly open regarding what could happen in the future, stating,

“I’m happy at Manchester City; I have everything I need. After the Club World Cup, we’ll see what happens,” he said while on international duty.

However, the latest information points towards Manchester City’s desire to keep him at the heart of their project for many years to come.

The report claims that the English club is extremely satisfied with the defender’s performances and have already begun negotiations over a new agreement.

In fact, discussions are believed to include an improved salary package that would better reflect his growing importance within the squad.

Reports also indicate that both parties are working in a positive atmosphere, with a long-term extension keeping him at the club for another four or five years.

Barcelona may need to look elsewhere

At Barcelona, this development could force the club to reconsider their defensive plans.

Even before the contract talks emerged, any potential deal for Gvardiol was likely to be extremely complicated due to the financial demands involved.

Manchester City invested heavily to bring him to England and have little incentive to entertain offers.

The situation becomes even more challenging when considering the ongoing transition taking place at the club.

With several senior figures having departed in recent years and Pep Guardiola no longer leading the project, Manchester City are eager to build their next era around a core group of younger stars and Gvardiol is viewed as one of those players.
