Baseball Players of Playoff week, presented by Atlantic City Electric VOTE

Each week we will feature some of the top performances across South Jersey baseball diamonds in our seven-county coverage area.

Gateway’s Matt Steedle was the top vote getter last week, garnering 36.9 percent of the 13.6 K votes recorded. Eastern’s Anthony Cataldo and Northern Burlington’s Joey Conley rounded out the top three vote getters.

Burlington County Scholastic League

Logan Downey, Northern Burlington. The sophomore contributed a pair of two-hit games as the defending state Group 3 champion Greyhounds began their title defense with wins over Long Branch and Burlington Township. Downey slugged his seventh homer of the season and scored three times against Long Branch. He raised his batting average to .400 with 30 hits and 34 RBIs.

Cole Mulcahy, Maple Shade. The Wildcats opened the South Jersey Group 1 tournament with a pair of one-run wins over Riverside and Wildwood and Mulcahy was in the middle of all the action. The senior went 3-for-4 with two walks and a HBP in the two games. He’s batting .356 this spring and leads the club with 26 runs scored.

Kelwin Batista, Pennsauken. The senior closed out his scholastic career with a pair of two-hit games in the South Jersey Group 4 tournament. He doubled, homered and drove in four runs in a 9-3 victory over Howell on May 28. He added two more knocks in a 3-1 loss to Eastern the next day. Batista had 28 hits this spring, including seven that went for homers. On the mound, he finished his career with 248 strikeouts.

Colonial Conference

Ryan Gallagher, Haddon Township. The sophomore went 2-for-3 with four RBIs to help power the Hawks to a 19-1 victory over LEAP Academy in the opening round of the South Jersey Group 1 tournament on May 28. He also had a hit in his only at-bat in Township’s last regular-season game on May 26.

Cole Simon, Haddon Heights. The junior racked up a career-best 14 strikeouts and scattered four hits en route to a complete-game victory as the Garnets checked into the South Jersey Group 2 semifinal round with a 4-2 win over Barnegat on May 29. It was Simon’s second double-digit K game of the season and his fifth win in his last seven appearances on the bump. He also had two hits and three runs scored in Heights’ two postseason games.

Will Solak, Haddonfield. The senior fired a no-hitter with a career-high 16 strikeouts as the Haddons opened the South Jersey Group 2 tournament with a 6-0 win over Collingswood on May 28. He needed 97 pitches to cover a season-high seven innings of work and recorded his first-ever double-digit K game.

Olympic Conference

Christian Corbellozzo, Rancocas Valley. The Red Devils didn’t surrender a run over their first two postseason games, including this senior’s two-hit gem against Southern on May 27 Corbellozzo struck out six, walked one and gave up two singles.          

Ryan Moyer, Cherry Hill East. The senior went 5-for-8 (.625) with four RBIs as the Cougars collected a pair of one-run victories over Vineland and defending state Group 4 champion Cherokee. Moyer has eight knocks and seven RBIs in his last three games, raising his batting average to .408.

Vaughn Worthington, Seneca. The senior pitched a complete-game three-hitter with a career-high 13 strikeouts as the Golden Eagles soared into the South Jersey Group 2 semifinal with a 1-0 win over Sterling on May 29. He needed just 91 pitches to cover seven innings while surrendering three singles and one walk.

Tri-County Conference

Brayden Bell, Kingsway. The sophomore stole three bases, scored twice and knocked in three runs as the Dragons moved into the South Jersey Group 4 semifinal round with victories over Central Regional and Lenape. Bell went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases against Central. He’s third on the club with 22 runs scored.

Logan Streitz, Pennsville. The senior went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a three-run homer and seven RBIs in a 13-7 victory over Haddon Township in the South Jersey Group 1 quarterfinal round on May 29. Streitz also closed the game out with two hitless innings, striking out four.

Thomas Tucci, Woodstown. The junior collected three hits and four RBIs to highlight the Wolverines’ playoff wins over Clayton and Buena in the South Jersey Group 1 tournament. He slugged a three-run homer, his first round-tripper in his scholastic career, as Woodstown sank the Clippers on May 27.

Andrew Weir, Delsea. As the Crusaders heated up in the postseason, so has Weir. The junior went 4-for-7 with two runs scored and three RBIs in win over Ocean City and Moorestown as Delsea advanced to the South Jersey Group 3 semifinal round. Weir posted seven multi-hit games in May, helping to raise his batting average to .375 with 27 knocks and 23 RBIs.

Cape-Atlantic League

Colton Donahue, Mainland. The senior had three hits, including his first triple of the season, and drove in three runs during the Mustangs’ run to the South Jersey Group 3 semifinal round with wins over Lacey and Cherry Hill West. Donahue has five hits in his last three games, raising his batting average to .283.

Nolan Scholder, Cedar Creek. After piling up the hits in the regular season, the junior kept the knock train rolling in the postseason. He went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three walks in wins over Pleasantville and West Deptford as the Pirates checked into the South Jersey Group 2 semifinal round. Scholder has filled up the stat sheet this spring with 42 hits, 36 runs scored, 22 walks and 21 stolen bases.

Ethan Suppi, St. Augustine. The University of Miami commit tripled, knocked in two runs and swiped a base as the Hermits opened their postseason with an 8-0 win over Pingry on May 28. He has 27 hits, 14 walks and 27 runs scored for the season.
