Toronto received major injury news Saturday morning when it was revealed Berrios will undergo elbow surgery next week to repair the stress fracture that has sidelined him throughout the season. According to Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae, there is also concern involving potential ligament damage, though the full extent will not be known until the procedure takes place. That uncertainty leaves the Blue Jays facing another major question mark in a season already filled with them.

Jose Berrios’ durability suddenly disappears at worst possible time
For nearly a decade, Berrios built a reputation as one of baseball’s most durable starting pitchers. The 31-year-old consistently took the ball every fifth day for both the Minnesota Twins and Blue Jays, making at least 30 starts in every full season since 2018. Even during the shortened 2020 season, Berrios still made 12 starts while handling a full workload.
That reliability made him incredibly valuable for Toronto’s rotation. Now, the Blue Jays are facing the possibility of losing him for the remainder of the 2026 season, depending on what doctors discover during surgery. If ligament damage requires additional repair, Berrios could be looking at a significantly longer recovery timeline.
The timing could hardly be worse for Toronto. The Blue Jays are already navigating injuries throughout the pitching staff, including absences involving Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer and Bowden Francis. Francis has already been ruled out for the season, while Toronto continues waiting for Bieber and Scherzer to work their way back.
