Browns bring back familiar face onto player development staff

The Cleveland Browns are welcoming back a familiar face to Berea, though he will be trading his helmet for a clipboard. Demetric Felton Jr. is officially retiring from professional football.

Selected by the Browns in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Felton played a limited but memorable role for the team over two seasons, scoring two touchdowns including this electric play against the Texans. Now, his journey comes full circle as he joins the organization’s player development staff.

In an emotional official statement, Felton made it clear that his decision to step away from playing was driven by a deeper purpose, rather than injury or a lack of passion. He emphasized the intense sacrifices required by the game, noting that true fulfillment comes from serving others.

“I’m retiring because I know there’s a football player out there who needs me,” Felton said. “I’m retiring from professional football to take a role in Player Development with the Cleveland Browns. This is not the end of my football life. This is my evolution.”

Felton reflected on the realities of entering the league, recalling how he was handed a 400-page playbook and an overwhelming set of responsibilities with little investment in his growth as an individual. He realized that figuring it out alone should not be the standard, and every player deserves better.

By stepping into this new role, Felton aims to bridge that gap for the next generation of athletes wearing the orange and brown. He expressed profound gratitude to the front office for the opportunity to provide the exact mentorship and guidance he missed during his own transition into the NFL.

“I’m motivated to give every player I come in contact with two things I never had,” Felton shared. “The person who sees them for who they are, not just the stats or the wins, and the resource I wish I had every single time I walked into a new building. The sacrifice was never wasted. It was always for this.”
