Browns had unique ask in trade talks for pick #6, did ‘pretty good’ playing the board

The 2026 NFL draft is in the books, which means everyone is starting to turn the page toward the Cleveland Browns 53-man roster and even the 2027 NFL draft. For now, the Browns did exactly what people expected of them early in the draft: traded down, added an offensive tackle, and added a wide receiver.

After that, Cleveland got good grades for their work to continue to add to the offense and by adding a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball.

In all, GM Andrew Berry made six trades during this year’s draft, including moving down from the sixth overall pick in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Browns added an extra third and an extra fifth-round pick to move down three spots, but had a unique request when talking to the Chiefs about the trade, according to Albert Breer:

The trade off on the draft value chart—the picks Browns were getting add to 1,602 points, the sixth pick is worth 1,600—is just about perfect. But Berry asked for one thing to push the deal past the goal line. He wanted to know whether Kansas City would be taking an offensive or defensive player.

Veach answered defense. Berry agreed to the terms. 

We can’t say for sure how rare that question is in trade conversation, or how often the opposing GM will actually answer it, but we know it is notable enough for Breer to add it to his post-draft writeup.

Breer also noted how the first trade connected together with other moves, with Berry doing “pretty good playing of the board” this year:

As for the rest of the haul, the Browns traded both picks, then moved back into the third round, and grabbed Florida OT Austin Barber. In the end, the net of it, for the drop, was Fano, Barber and two 2027 fourth-rounders for the sixth pick and a sixth-rounder (thrown into one of the trades). Which, as opposed to just getting Fano, which would’ve been fine, is a pretty good playing of the board.

Not a bad trade, overall, to add two offensive tackles and two fourth-round picks to move down three spots (with a sixth-round pick thrown in).
