Clemson quarterback room near bottom of ESPN rankings, clear lack of faith

Clemson’s quarterback battle will carry plenty of attention into the fall, and nationally there’s still a lot of hesitation around how the Tigers stack up at the position.

ESPN’s annual rankings of quarterback situations across college football placed Clemson in Tier 12, grouping the Tigers with Cincinnati, North Carolina and Tennessee. The ranking reflects the uncertainty surrounding Clemson as it heads toward the 2026 season with Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds competing for the starting role after Cade Klubnik’s departure.

Vizzina appears to be the leading candidate heading into camp, though he still has limited game experience. His most extensive action came last season against SMU, when he threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns while completing 29 passes. Even in a losing effort, it was a glimpse of what Clemson could have if he takes control of the offense.

Still, ESPN’s view of Clemson goes beyond one player. The broader concern centers on the program’s quarterback production over the past several years compared to where it once was during its championship run.

The numbers tell that story clearly. Clemson posted a Total QBR of 82.1 from 2015 through 2020, which ranked third nationally during that stretch. From 2021 through 2025, that number dropped to 60.7, falling to 62nd nationally.

David Hale pointed to that recent history while explaining Clemson’s placement, noting that the pressure around the position feels familiar given how previous quarterback transitions have played out under Dabo Swinney.

Behind Vizzina, Reynolds continues to be a name to watch. Swinney recently said Reynolds emerged from a crowded battle to secure the No. 2 spot and earned the chance to push Vizzina entering preseason camp.

“We’re coming out with some clarity, and we have two really good players who are going to go compete,” Swinney said.

Clemson will get its answer soon enough. The Tigers open the season Sept. 5 at LSU in one of the most anticipated matchups on their schedule, and whoever wins the job will be stepping into a massive spotlight from the opening snap.
